A Study on the Job Satisfaction and Job Stress of the School Nurse

Abstract
This study was attempted to help school nurse conduct the effective school health service of good quality, to prompt the system for their playing a efficient role and to improve their working conditions and performance of the duty by investigating the degree of job satisfaction and the factors of job stress. The subjects of this study are 394 school nurse in primary, junior and senior high school in Chungnam province and Basic data were collected for twenty days from June l st to June 20th in 1998. To collected the data, two measuring Instruments are used: one is the measuring instrument of the degree of job satisfaction for teachers¡¯ opinion poll invented and developed by Korean teachers association, which had been reformed and used by Hwang and then was used with another supplement in this study the other is the instrument of job stress made up of 27 questions for job stress factors which are selected from the instrument of measuring the stress of public school teachers used by Jung. The data were analyzed by Frequency, Mean, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient using the SAS statistical program. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1) Degree of job Satisfaction according to factors This study conducted with 7 factors and 50 questions about the degrees of job satisfaction showed mat average score for the job satisfaction was 3.044 out of full average marks 5.0, a little bit higher than the average satisfaction level 3.00. According to the degrees of job satisfaction, 7 factors are ranked as human relationship(3.569), recognized status(3.39), working environment (3.325), the task under charge(3.093), the management system (2,822), the reward system(2.529) and the expansion of the speciality(2.163). 2) Degree of job stress according to factors. This study conducted with 8 factors and 27 questions about the degrees of job stress showed that average score for the job stress was 3.099 out of full average marks 5.0, a little bit higher than the average stress level 3.00. The important factors for it were placed in the following order, organization structure factor(3.428), service obligation factor(3.329), career development factor(3.267), education process factor (3.207), salary factor(3.089), social recognition factor(3.089), physical environment factor(2.924), human relation factor(2.458). 3) Correlation between job satisfaction and job stress. Negative correlation were found between job satisfaction and job stress(r=-0.4740, p<0.001) and In the study for the degree of job stress according to satisfactory factors, the most negative factor related to job stress is the reward system (r=-0.4295, p<0.001)) and so every factor has significant correlation to job stress. As shown in the results above, the improvement of school nurse job satisfaction will be accomplished by locating and amending the job stress factors and institutional reform, such as the promotion, the security of specialized staff, the establishment of system for encouraging learning, the security of health education regular lessons and the expanded opportunity of training and so on, should be considered.
